Kilcolgan Castle rose as a tower house in County Galway, a vertical fist of stone built to watch the coast and command the local landscape. It is called a castle because that is what it did: it concentrated power, visibility and defence in one place. Whether it guarded trade, terrorised neighbours or simply housed a proud family, the shape is clear. A tower house is a statement written in mortar, saying this land belongs to someone and they intend to be remembered.
