What is recorded here
That is the end of wonder in the world. The true story of Fermoyle and the hidden chamber is no longer available to human memory.
Internal diam. 22.7m N-S, 21m E-W
This site, not marked on the OS maps, is located on the summit of a low rise in rough pasture on the E side of the Small river valley, overlooking the estuary of the Sneem river. Its enclosing wall is now reduced to a sod-covered stone bank which is flush with the level of the interior of the site. It survives to a maximum external height of .95m at N, where it is faced with rough drystone masonry and is intermittently revetted by slabs set on edge. The sides of a well-defined entrance gap at E, 2.65m wide, are faced with upright slabs. The interior of the site is bisected by a modern fence. Towards its centre is a semicircular arc of walling, probably the remains of a hut (KE091-025001-), which measures 3.8m in internal diameter and survives as a neatly coursed wall of drystone masonry, .6m wide and .15m high.
The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 585. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
