Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Cahergarriff

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

Cahergarriff, or Cathair Garbh, lost its visible stone fort to time or deliberate erasure, leaving behind a hidden underground passage and a forgotten hut in open pasture. The land remembers the shape of what disappeared, holding a chamber beneath the grass where people may have descended when storms came or when they wanted to vanish from the world above.
In pasture, with good views over the surrounding countryside. According to local information, this was the location of the stone fort that gave its name to this townland: Cathair Garbh. The possible cashel is not visible at ground level. It may have been associated with a Man-made underground passage (CO127-030001-), which is also at this location. A hut site (CO127-030002-) lies c. 70m to the NE. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009
