Fairy fort / ringfort in Newcastle Farm

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort / ringfort in Newcastle Farm was a 40-metre circular platform in low-lying grassland near Newcastle Village, recorded on a 1937 map and later seen only as a cropmark before destruction. It is gone from the ground now, but shape and size remain in the archived image. That is enough to wonder who lived there, what they kept safe, and why the land forgot them so quickly.
Situated in low-lying grassland on the outskirts of Newcastle Village. Shown on 1937 edition of the OS 6-inch map as a circular platform (diam. c. 40m). The site is evident as a cropmark on aerial photography taken c. 1990 (OS 8: 2858). It has since been destroyed and is not visible at ground level. Compiled by Geraldine Stout
