Fairy fort / ringfort in Damerstown East

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Damerstown East once held a broad circular fort beside the Dinin river, but machines erased its ridge around 1970. The forgotten shape still shows through the field as a scar of broken stone, waiting for someone to remember the hands that built it.
On fairly flat ground on the E side of the Dinin river valley, in rolling grassland. A roughly circular area (dims. c. 46m N-S; c. 44m E-W) depicted on the 1947 revision 6-inch OS map as being enclosed by a wide fosse (Wth c. 6m). The monument was levelled c. 1970, however, the location of the enclosure is still evident as disturbed rocky area in the reclaimed field. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 18 December 2018
