Fairy fort / ringfort in Blackrock (talbotstown Lower By.)

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Situated on the NW-facing slope of Lugnagun. Circular area (diam. 20m) defined by an earth and stone bank (H c. 1m), with traces of low banks in the centre of the interior possibly defining a structure (dims. c. 7m x 6m). An arc of stones to the SW of this, visible when the site was visited in 1971, may have represented a Man-made underground passage. A house has been built within the enclosure and little remains of it other than a scarp at the rear of the house which may preserve part of the bank. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wicklow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 December 2008
