Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Trostan

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are misnamed: they are human ringforts, often farmer-steeped or ploughed out, while real fairy beliefs belong to people, not cameras. In Trostan the earthen bank has vanished, yet the oval shadow still cuts across the field, a ghost of ownership written in soil and memory.
Located on a high shelf and at the crest of a S-facing slope. It was described in 1966 as a completely overgrown area defined by an earthen bank (at N: Wth of base 4m; Wth of top 1m; int. H 1.15m; ext. H 1.9m) with no visible fosse. It has been removed since then, but it can be seen as a cropmark of an oval enclosure (dims c. 50m N-S; c. 35m E-W) defined by a single fosse feature and bisected by an ENE-WSW field bank on the OSI aerial images (1995). Rath (MO031-043----) and rath (MO031-044----) are c. 180m to the NW and SW respectively. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of revision: 28 July 2017

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
