What is recorded here
Tooreennafersha holds a lost ringfort whose cave entrance has closed, erasing the landmark from modern maps. The earth may have swallowed the doorway or people may have stopped visiting the fort because its interior became dangerous. In either case the land kept the fort private while the wider world forgot it.
A 'fort having a cave (KE091-105001- ) in it, now closed up', is recorded in this townland in the OSNB (Templeno, 19). It is not marked on the OS maps and its precise location could not be established.
The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 696. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
