Half-hidden under pasture and tree roots, the double-ringed fort in Sorrel still holds its shape at the foot of Knockafutera. Cattle have worn gaps through its banks for generations, yet the inner circle, outer bank and flooded ditch remain visible enough to walk around. People may have lived there before the fields came, or the hills may have simply shaped the earth into a room large enough for imagination. Either way, the fort does not disappear; it waits beneath grass and shadow for someone to stop and look.

In pasture, on break in slope at foot of NNW-facing slope of Knockafutera (Ballyhoura Mountain range). Roughly circular, slightly raised area (34.15m E-W; 29.2m N-S) enclosed by two earthen banks and intervening fosse; outer fosse (D 0.2m) to SE. Inner bank (int. H 0.2m; ext. H 1.05m) planted with mature deciduous trees. Intervening fosse (Wth 2.7m) disturbed by field boundary to NE; waterlogged to W. Outer bank (H 1.2m) levelled to NE. Break in banks to WSW; numerous cattle gaps through banks. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
