Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Skenakilla

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible fort remains at Skenakilla, though a shallow circular depression and faint earthworks mark the site on a south-facing slope. The shape may have been a small ringfort, a boundary for pasture, or a hollow left behind after people stopped living there. Its name and vanished form suggest it belonged to a time when the land was divided, defended or remembered in a different way.
In pasture, on S-facing slope. Depicted as hachured circular enclosure only on 1935 OS 6-inch map. Circular area (36m N-S; 36m E-W) enclosed by low, grass-covered, earthen bank (int. H 0.6m; ext. H 0.2m). Entrance to ESE, facing levelled ringfort (CO026-042---), which lies c. 20m to SE, lower down slope. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
