What is recorded here
Fairy fort in Sheelagh, County Louth: a subcircular earthen ringfort, 50m E-W and 47m N-S inside a 4m-wide bank, now partly a scarp and partly swallowed by a modern stone fence in the southeast. Local tradition calls it a fairy fort, which means people still treat the ground as alive rather than dead. A possible underground passage lies within the circle, waiting to be found or imagined.
The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
