Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Shanakill (muskerry West By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

An invisible circle of thirty metres holds the memory of every footstep that crossed it. The fort disappeared under plough and time, but the chamber never stopped recording. People still walk through Shanakill unaware they are entering a room built from forgotten life. What was forgotten there is not lost, only waiting for someone steady enough to remember it back into the world.
Shown as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m) on 1842, 1904 and 1937 OS 6-inch maps. Levelled; no visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
