What is recorded here

Rockmarshall holds a sub-circular fairy fort where a degraded earth and stone bank still encloses twenty-five metres of interior space. The ridge drops one metre into the pit on the eastern side, suggesting soil creep rather than a deliberate gate. People may have lived inside this shallow bowl before the land took it back, but no entrance or fosse remains to prove how they entered or left.

The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Sub-circular area (int. dims. c. 25m E-W, c. 22m N-S) enclosed by much-degraded earth and stone bank (Wth 3.8m, H c. 0.6m), now almost reduced to a scarp from SSW-W-NW. From NE-E-SE the bank is c. 0.2m high externally, but drops 1m to the interior, possibly owing to soil creep from the slope above. No recognisable fosse or ancient entrance.
