Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Raheever

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are never empty. They are waiting rooms where human time folds and the dead or displaced keep living beside the road. Raheever is one of those rooms: a hidden fort on a drumlin ridge, marked and then diminished on later maps. It is not lost so much as patient, holding the shape of lives that ordinary history forgot.
Marked 'Fort' on OS 1836 ed. and 'Site of' on 1876 ed. Situated on the S shoulder of a drumlin ridge. Not visible at ground level. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
