Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Raheenmeel

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are never ordinary. They hide, shift or resist measurement. In Raheenmeel the bank still stands around a working farm, but no human chamber has appeared beneath it. The land may be staging a trick older than surveying.
Depicted as 'Williams Fort' on the 1912 edition of the OS 6-inch map. Modern sheds and large 19th-century house built inside large enclosure on line of earthen bank which encloses modern farmyard. Recent erection of sheds inside enclosure revealed no archaeological deposits. Not marked on 1840 edition of OS 6-inch map. Possible landscape feature. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 May 2011
