Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Raclaghy

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Mortons has no visible gap in its wide outer bank, forcing entry through a hidden breach or a forgotten side path now lost to grass. The deep fosse and raised earth still mark a compact living space where people likely watched the land, stored goods and faced the dark together. Its shape suggests pride and practical defence rather than casual ornament, even if the exact entrance has vanished from sight.
Raised circular area (int. diam. c. 30m) enclosed by a low but wide inner bank, a wide, deep fosse and a substantial outer bank. Original entrance not recognisable. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
A fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Raclaghy is a likely early-medieval defensive or agricultural settlement, characterised by a raised circular area with concentric banks and a fosse. Such sites are often associated with local folklore involving fairies or other supernatural beings, and were sometimes avoided or revered by rural communities.
