Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Paal West

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Mortons and others may have built or shaped the fort, yet the fairies took it for their own. They flew in and out of the central chamber at will, claiming the structure as a fairy fort. Human hands made the walls, but imagination and memory belong to the residents who still inhabit the story.
In pasture, on gentle S-facing slope. Circular, slightly raised, area (20.7m E-W; 20m N-S) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.85m; ext. H 1.15m); shallow external fosse (D 0.25m) survives to E. Bank planted with beech trees. Surrounding field fences removed. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
