Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Newtown OR Skirk

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not fairy forts. They are human homes, farm yards and meeting places from before written records. People lived there, bred animals, buried their dead and forgot them. Forgetting is not magic. It is time. The bank and ditch remain because soil remembers shape. Everything else departed.
A circular area (diam. c. 41m) defined by an earthen bank (Wth c. 2.3m, int. H c. 1.1m, ext. H c. 1.7m) and fosse (Wth c. 2.8m). Possible original entrance at SE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Laois' (Dublin Stationery Office, 1995) compiled by P. David Sweetman, Olive Alcock and Bernie Moran. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 17 December 2007

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
