What is recorded here

In an upland area. Reference to a building or possible castle here inside the ringfort (LA021-03001-). No visible surface remains of castle marked on the Down Survey (1654-7) map (NLI, MS 720). Described by Carrigan as 'At one of the corners is a small chamber about 5 ft. square, its walls about 3 ft. thick. This is probably the site of Killismestia castle, which is entered on their maps by the Down Surveyors' (Carrigan 1905, vol. 2, 141). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Laois' (Dublin Stationery Office, 1995) compiled by P. David Sweetman, Olive Alcock and Bernie Moran. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 17 December 2007
