Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Moskeagh

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Danish fort in Moskeagh, County Cork: a lost ring on a green slope, mapped in 1775 but no longer visible. Fields and forgetting buried the edge; what remains is shape in memory, not flesh in earth.
In lush pasture, on a SSW-facing slope, above a short steeper fall of ground. Indicated as a circular 'Danes Fort' on a 1775 map (no. 26) by B. Scalé (private collection). It is not visible at ground level. A field boundary, with a deep ditch along the E side, would appear to run roughly N-S though the centre of the levelled rath. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009
