Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Lisduff (clanmahon By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Two earthen banks and a deep central ditch encircle a raised circular space thirty-two metres across in Lisduff. The southeast gap contains a causeway, marking the entrance where people once crossed into the protected middle. The shape suggests a inhabited stronghold rather than a fairy tale, yet local names still treat it as otherworldly.
Raised circular area (int. diam. 32m) enclosed by two earthen banks with wide, deep intermediate fosse. Corresponding breaks in the banks with accompanying causeway at SE represents original entrance. (CUCAP AHM 90/91) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
