Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Leitrim (clankee By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Clankee By holds a twenty-six-metre fairy fort where a low earthen bank still encloses a raised circular area. People later faced parts of the bank with stone and levelled the western edge, yet the shallow fosse remains visible from the south-west to the north-east. The original entrance has vanished, leaving the ring closed and mysterious. It is no longer a doorway for humans, but perhaps the fairies never needed one because they fly.
Raised circular area (int. diam. c. 26m) enclosed by a low earthen bank, partly faced with stone in recent times and levelled at W, and a shallow fosse identifiable from S-W-NE. Original entrance not recognisable. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
