Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Laharan (duhallow By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Bailocke Mountain watches a twenty-eight metre earthen circle where human hands built a fort before fairy tales claimed it back. Stone faces the northern bank while trees and briars choke the interior, hiding an underground passage that may have served people or spirits. The fort stands at the mountain's foot, half forgotten and half alive, waiting for someone brave enough to walk its hidden lane.
In level pasture, at base of Bailocke Mountain, on S side of farmyard. Circular area (diam. c. 28m) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 1.9m; ext. H 1.1m); external fosse (D 1.6m) to S and W. Top half of inner face of N bank stone-faced. Drain cutting through N half of interior disturbs bank to NE and W. Fosse skirted by low field boundary to S; substantial earthen bank edging laneway SW to NNW; farmyard to N and NE. Interior heavily overgrown with trees and briars; Man-made underground passage (CO041-01202-) in W half. Recorded by Bowman (1934, 573) as double-ramparted fort, with half of outer circuit levelled. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
