Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Lackendarragh

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Lackendarragh holds a levelled ringfort thirty metres across, reduced to a low rise within modern pasture. The western edge still reinforces a field fence, proving the ancient boundary never fully disappeared even when the central earthworks vanished. Humans likely built and abandoned the site before regional maps measured what remained.
In level pasture. Depicted as hachured subcircular enclosure on 1842 OS 6-inch map; W side survives incorporated into field fence system on 1904 and 1938 OS 6-inch maps. Levelled; circular area (32m E-W; 30m N-S) defined by low rise (int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.65m). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
