Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Knocknahorgan

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Knocknahorgan held a twenty-five-metre earthen ring on a south-facing slope, visible enough in 1842 for surveyors to draw its banks and the fences running from them. That clarity vanished before human memory, leaving only pasture and the faint suggestion of a circle beneath the grass. The fort disappeared not through destruction but through forgetting, its walls surrendered to soil and pasture until even the shape became a rumor. What remains is the certainty that something stood there, large enough to mark and permanent enough to resist erasure for centuries before releasing its form entirely.
In pasture, on S-facing slope. Shown as circular enclosure (diam. c. 25m) on 1842 OS 6-inch map; field fences run off from N and S banks. Levelled; no visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
