What is recorded here

Old Court (Site of), Brooklodge (barrymore By.) is the lost castle of the Barrys, recorded on the 1842 map and cut through by a new road by 1904. Its fish pond vanished with the rest, leaving only a road bed where a household once lived.
Shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map; by 1904 OS 6-inch map new road going through area of site. Immediately to E, 1842 map shows site of 'old fish pond'; this also probably destroyed when new road constructed. Possibly a castle of the Barrys (O Murchadha 1985, 30). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
