Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Knocknageeha East

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Knocknageeha East holds a thirty-six-metre earthen ring on a ridge crest, joining two other forts within a hundred and fifty metres. The field still answers to the name Fort Field, preserving the shape rather than the forgotten hands that built it. Animals graze the smooth bank today, but the close cluster suggests a whole neighbourhood lived there before the land was divided.
In pasture, on crest of ridge. Circular area (diam. 36m) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 1.25m; ext. H 1.5m) NNW->ESE and SW->W; scarp (H 1.55m) with slight internal lip (H 0.2m) ESE->SW. Interior nearly level; raised on S side to compensate for hillslope. Field known as 'fort field' (Broker 1937, 51). Two ringforts (CO030-087---, CO030-088---) and one possible ringfort (CO030-089---) lie c. 150m to SSW, c. 120m to WNW and c. 50m to NNW respectively. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
