Fairy forts in County Limerick were often called forts because they looked like defensive rings, yet no weapon ever flew across that much open pasture. Knockanea still holds its shallow circle and broken bank, waiting for the chance to show what it guarded. The fairies may have danced there, but the shape and size suggest human hands built a home or marker long before magic entered the story.

Situated in low-lying pasture with good views in all directions. The monument consists of a circular area (16.6m N-S; 15.5m E-W) defined by a scarped edge (Wth 3m; H 0.6m) with an external fosse (Wth 2m) and an external bank (int. H 0.3m; Wth 2m; ext. H 0.25m). There is a reduction in the height of the scarp to S (Wth. 3.7m) and it has been eroded at NE and SE. The fosse is evident from NE to SE and SW to NNE. The external bank is intermittent from NE to SE, and from SW to NW. The interior is uneven and slopes down to S. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 20 June 2013
