What is recorded here
Knockacappul holds a thirty-five metre circular earthwork where a hidden bank still crosses the field. People may have lived inside that simple ring before forgetting the names of everyone who walked it. The soil remembers the shape even when human memory releases it.
Circular enclosure (diam. c. 35m) visible in aerial photograph as cropmark of bank E->W; external fosse clearly visible c. E->N and barely visible elsewhere.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
