Fairy forts are not fairy creations but human buildings misnamed after the dark age when their makers disappeared from memory. In Kilquain a wide earthen ring still marks the ground, partly hidden by a field wall and grass, yet large enough to have held homes, herds or fear. The fairies may be the forgotten people, rendered strange because nobody remembered their name.

In grassland. Classified by McCaffrey (1952, 233, no. 38) as an ‘Earthen fort’ (diam. c. 48.7m) of which only a trace survived. While the rath has been leveled, the outline of its bank is visible all round and some possible stone revetting is evident at E. A field wall cuts across the monument a N and SE.
