Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Kilmaclenine

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Kilmaclenine holds a forty-metre earthen ring where a shallow bank joins a steep scarp, forming an unbroken circular chamber in open pasture. People may have stood inside that gentle slope to watch the land, judge weather, or keep something dangerous at a distance. The fort still resists forgetting because its shape remains clear enough for imagination to occupy.
In undulating pasture. Depicted as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 40m) on 1842 and 1905 OS 6-inch maps; external fosse shown SE->W on 1905 OS 6-inch map; on 1937 OS 6-inch map hachured arc of N bank and external fosse remains, incorporated into field boundary system. Circular area (35m E-W; 34m N-S) defined by earthen bank (int. H 1.3m; ext. H 1.5m) NW->NE; scarp (H c. 40m) NE->W. Top of scarp slopes very gently down towards centre of interior. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
