Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Killowen (kinalea By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Killowen held a forty-five-metre earthen ringfort, open to the east and planted with trees, before human hands levelled the last visible trace. The earth forgot the shape, but the story remains: a small fort large enough to exclude, ordinary enough to disappear.
Shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map as circular enclosure (diam. c. 45m), planted with trees; as arc of hachures S->N, open to E, on 1902 OS 6-inch map. Levelled; no visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
