What is recorded here
Fairy fort in Killavallig, County Cork: double-ramparted ringfort about thirty-seven yards across on P. Cronin's land. The inner rampart and half the outer are levelled; what remains stands four feet high. People called it a fairy fort because the shape stopped making human sense, yet it may have been an ordinary defended home whose owners are no longer named.
Bowman (1934, 42-3) recorded double-ramparted ringfort (diam. c. 37yd) on P. Cronin's land; inner rampart and half of outer rampart levelled; remaining part of outer bank c. 4ft H. Exact location not known.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
