Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Kilcolman (duhallow By., Kilshannig Par.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Kilcolman holds a twenty-five-metre earthen ring on a northwest-facing slope, marked by a surviving one-and-a-half-metre scarp and a deeper outer bank. A stream skirts the western edge while an ancient road passes sixty metres east, linking the hidden circle to wider travel. The earth may have served humans before fairy labels cloudied its purpose, yet the ring still excludes ordinary sight and invites wonder.
In pasture, on NW-facing slope. Depicted as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 25m), skirted by townland boundary to W on 1842 OS 6-inch map; W half only hachured as bank with external fosse on 1904 OS 6-inch map and as scarp with external fosse to SW on 1938 OS 6-inch map. Arc formed by scarp (H 1.65m) survives S->N. Substantial outer earthen bank (int. H 1.7m) exists SW->WNW. Stream running along field boundary skirts bank to W. Circular enclosure visible as cropmark of fosse in aerial photograph (GSIAP, W387). Ancient road (CO041-181---) c. 60m to E of ringfort. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
