Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Island

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Island holds a substantial earthen ringfort with a thirty-seven-metre interior, a southeast break marking its entrance. The soil remains thick enough to exclude ordinary sight, while the missing wall invites imagination to complete the circle. Human hands shaped the bank, yet the absence of a visible gate transfers the boundary from stone to memory. The fort does not display a warning; it withholds recognition.
Raised circular area (int. diam. c. 37m) enclosed by a substantial earthen bank and traces of a fosse. Break in bank at SE may represent original entrance. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
