Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Inchafune

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Inchafune holds a broad earthen disc where human hands shaped soil into a living boundary centuries ago. The fort stands two metres above the pasture, waiting for footsteps that have long since scattered into wind. Its southern gap remains open, inviting entry into a chamber where memory and imagination still move.
In pasture, atop low rise. Roughly circular platform (40m N-S; 36m E-W), raised 2m above level of surrounding field, enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.5m). Entrance to S (Wth 4m). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
