Fairy forts in Ireland are often raths, not literal castles for unseen creatures. In Greenane, the earth still marks a small defensive ring: a central bank, a southern gap, an outer ditch and a second outer bank. Cattle have worn parts of it flat, but the shape remains clear in the pasture. The fairy name may be later folklore layered onto an old human home.

Situated in poorly-drained, gently rolling pasture with good views in all directions. The monument is evident as a roughly circular area (15.4m NE-SW; 14.6m NW-SE) enclosed by an earthen bank (int. H 0.2m; Wth 1m; ext. H 1.1m) which dips in the S (Wth 12m), with an external fosse from NNE to NW (Wth 4.6m), and an external earthen bank (int. H 0.7m; Wth 1.2m; ext. H 0.3m) evident from NNE to E and from SE to SW and from WSW to NW. The interior and the enclosing element have been heavily poached by cattle. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 25 June 2013
