Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Greenane

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Scraped earth and forgotten anger. That is all a fairy fort is. A human dwelling someone stopped naming. The boundary still holds because the memory did not leave. Forgetting is not the same as killing.
Situated on a gentle NE-facing slope in flat, poorly-drained pasture, with good views in all directions. The monument is obscured by dense scrub vegetation but is evident as a roughly circular area (diam. 19m NW-SE) defined by a scarped edge (Wth 4.5m; H 1.5m) with an external fosse (Wth 6.2m) and an external counter-scarp bank (int. H 0.5-0.8m; Wth 1.5-3.7m; ext. H 0.3m) of earth-and-stone. The interior is uneven and slopes down from the centre in all directions. A sub-oval depression in the centre (4m NE-SW; 3.5m N-S; D 0.8m) is partially obscured by scrub. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 25 June 2013
