Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Grange Lower

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Grange Lower is a circular earthwork with a scarped edge, external fosse and counterscarp bank, preserving the shape of an old defended or occupied place. Now pasture and drainage have taken part of its boundary, while bushes and briars hide much of the rim. The clear interior and concealed edge create a strange division: half remembered by the field, half kept from it.
In pasture. Circular area (39.2m E-W) defined by scarped edge (H 1.05m; Wth 1.6m) with external fosse (Wth 3.2m) and counterscarp bank (int. H 1.7m; ext. H 1.05m). Entrance at SE (Wth 2m). Fosse is incorporated into field drainage system on W side. Field boundary skirts site on W side. Centre of level interior is under rough grazing but most of perimeter and enclosing element are overgrown with bushes and briars. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
