Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Gortnaclogh (muskerry East By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Thirty metres of forgotten anger circle Gortnaclogh, hiding a human life inside a farm field. The earthen bank stands one metre high despite centuries of rain and ploughs, suggesting the fort resisted erasure rather than merely decaying. Fairy forts often mark places where ordinary time bends, but this is an earthen ringfort built by people who wanted to be remembered. They failed, yet the circle remains.
In tillage, Roughly circular area (diam. 30m) enclosed by earthen bank (H 1.1m); external fosse (D 0.6m). Bank low on N side; heavily overgrown elsewhere. Interior grass-covered. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
