Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Gortmolire

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

In 1934, a small portion of the rampart still formed a boundary fence on T. Colman's land, but the fort has since vanished beneath a farm trackway. Bowman measured forty-one yards of earthworks near the hilltop, yet modern ploughing erased even that stubborn reminder. The loss transforms a visible landmark into a forgotten ghost, proving how quickly human memory surrenders to agricultural convenience.
In pasture, near top of hill. Depicted as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 22m) on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Slightly to ESE, of position of site on 1842 OS 6-inch map, is kink in field fence, hachured (SE->SW) on 1936 OS 6-inch map. Site and field fence levelled with no visible surface trace surviving. Farm trackway now runs through site. Recorded by Bowman (1934, 580) as levelled single-ramparted fort (diam. c. 41yd) on T. Colman's land, where 'a small portion of the rampart remains to form a boundary fence'. According to local information, field boundary levelled c. 1974. Field known as 'Pairc a leasa' (ibid.). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
