Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Gorteennaskagh

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Gorteennaskagh, County Limerick: a sub-oval earthen ringfort, 19.7m by 16m, with a 0.9m scarped edge and faint external fosse, still set in flat pasture beside a modern bungalow. People may have lived there before the field took the shape of forgetting; the tilt of the ground and the shadow of the bank suggest a household that stopped answering. What is certain is the outline: a made space, marked twice, left behind.
Situated in flat pasture. A modern bungalow has been built c. 50m to SW. The monument consists of a sub-oval area (19.7m NE-SW; 16m N-S) defined by a scarped edge (Wth 5.9m; H 0.9m) with an external fosse (Wth 2.4m; D 0.1m) evident from NW to W. The interior slopes down to W. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 21 July 2013
