Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Gortavehy East

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Gortavehy East held a double-fenced fort large enough for a quarter acre before a roadway cut through its northern edge. The earth still marks a D-shaped basin on the east-facing slope, but the road took the side that once enclosed it. What remains is a wounded room in the pasture, half remembered and half erased.
In pasture, on E-facing slope. D-shaped area (straight side 39.5m E-W; projecting 16.9m to S) defined by scarp E->W with slight internal lip, especially noticeable to E and W; roadway running E-W encloses area on N side. No visible surface trace of enclosure to N of roadway. According to local information, 'fort' destroyed when roadway put through it. Broker (1937, 49) describes 'fort', 1/4 acre, double fence formerly, public road goes through it,....all fences nearly gone. Possible Man-made underground passage (9039) in interior. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
