What is recorded here
Thirty-six metres of packed earth rise above the Roughty River, marking a boundary where human hands shaped the landscape before memory faded. A hidden passage lies near the centre, waiting beneath the grass for someone brave enough to crawl into its dark. The road skims the northern bank, carrying modern wheels past a place that has watched the valley for centuries. What was built there, and for whom, has slipped into silence, leaving only the shape of its intent.
In level pasture overlooking the Roughty River to the S. A raised roughly circular area (36m E-W; 32m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 3.6m; int. H 0.35m; ext. H 2.55m) NE-NW and by a scarp NW-NE. The entrance is at ESE and there is a gap in the bank at WSW. The interior is largely grass-covered and slopes down gently to the SE; a Man-made underground passage (KE093-003002-) is near the centre. The bank is skirted by a road along the N arc and by a farm trackway NNE-SE. A 'stone circle' consisting of 'about 15 stones of varying sizes with a diameter of about 35 feet [10.66m]' was recorded in this rath in the 1940s (ITA). There are, however, no visible remains of any stone circle here. The feature recorded is unlikely to have been a stone circle but it may have been an enclosure (KE093-003001-).
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
