Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Glentrasna

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Bateman's map marked a ringfort in Glentrasna during 1716, yet modern eyes see only gentle swells beneath rough grazing. The fort may have vanished entirely or hidden beneath grass and time. Either way, the land kept a secret shape long enough to tempt a cartographer and confuse a surveyor.
In rough grazing on a steep W-facing slope. A ringfort is indicated here on Bateman's map (1716-1717, no. 56). Some undulations were noted in the ground but they could not be conclusively identified as the remains of a rath. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
