Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Garryduff (kinnatalloon By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not fairy forts at all. They are ordinary human ringforts, misnamed later because people stopped remembering the humans who built them. Garryduff is one of them: a small circular earthwork in pasture, now levelled and invisible except in old surveys. The fairies inherited what humanity forgot.
In pasture. Shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map as circular area (diam. c. 40m). Levelled; no visible surface trace. Associated with possible Man-made underground passage (CO054-063002-). Ringfort (CO054-062---) c. 120m to NW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
