Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Garranenageevoge

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Garranenageevoge held a twenty-metre earthen ring on a gentle slope above a stream, visible enough for surveyors to map in 1842 before ploughs and patience smoothed it into pasture. Local people called it a fort and planted potatoes inside its faded circle, turning ancient boundary into bread. The west edge still rises slightly, preserving the shape of a place that stopped being a fortress long before it became a field.
In pasture, on gentle N-facing slope, c. 30m S of stream. Depicted as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 20m) on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Levelled; circular area (22m N-S; 20m E-W) defined by low rise, most noticeable to W. According to local information, known as fort; potatoes once planted in interior. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
