Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Farranbrien East

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Farranbrien East is a 38-metre earthen ring on a south-east slope, its eroded bank still standing 1.6 metres high beside a field fence. The entrance faces east, the interior has been scarped level against the hillslope, and a shallow fosse remains visible to the west. Tyres now lie dumped inside the ancient circle, marking the place where human hands have repeatedly shaped, used and discarded the same ground.
In pasture, on SE-facing slope. Circular area (diam. 38m) enclosed by eroded bank (ext. H 1.6m); shallow fosse visible to W. Bank abuts field fence to NW. Entrance to E. Interior scarped to compensate for hillslope.Tyres dumped in interior. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
