Dungooly holds a sub-circular earthen ringfort with a wide inner bank, deep U-shaped fosse and a narrow south-east entrance gap. Its measurements are exact, but its purpose still leans toward mystery because a possible underground passage remains hidden inside. People may have lived, hidden or worshipped there before the land forgot their names.

The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Sub-circular area (int. dims. 37.7m E-W, 32.5m N-S) enclosed by inner bank (Wth 8m; H 0.7m internally, c. 3.5m externally), U-shaped fosse (Wth 6.2m, D 1.8m) and traces of an outer bank (Wth 4m, H 2m internally, c. 0.5m externally). Entrance gap (Wth 2.6m) in inner bank at SE. Possible Man-made underground passage (LH004-005002-) in interior.
