Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Drumkilly

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Drumkilly holds a thirty-metre oval trap where human anger forgot its own name. The fairies waited for the boy to chase them into the hole, then swallowed his shadows and half his years. He returned home old, angry and unable to remember why the sky annoyed him. The ring kept what it caught, including the boy’s wasted life.
Raised oval area (int. dims. 38.5m NW-SE; 30.8m NE-SW) enclosed by an earthen bank and fosse, both of which have been modified and incorporated into the field boundary. Original entrance not recognisable. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
